365-Degrees

A foggy morning greeted me on my walk to Guthrie Clinic for a 9:15 AM appointment. Exiting Guthrie and heading back west at just before 10 AM, some fog still remained, as seen in the photo above. On the right, you get a glimpse of CMOG--the Corning Museum of Glass--and on the left is the Corning YMCA. The river is just to the left (south) of the Y and I decided to walk along the dike.

What you see from this view is two bridges. The walking bridge is closest to me and just behind it is another bridge for vehicles. In the right upper corner of the pictures is part of Corning Inc. headquarters.

Turning myself more to the right, I catch the edge of a parking lot next to the Corning Y.

On the right, in the front is a corner of the Corning YMCA and behind it a tennis court. Across the street and further back in the photo is CMOG. The tall building in the background is also part of Corning Inc. and faces Pulteney Street.

Here we are back to Centerway Bridge.

I turned completely around -- no, I didn't. I just switched settings on the camera, so it would show me and the rest of the dike behind me.

Moving alongside the Chemung River, I'm getting closer to the Bridge Street bridge.

I've made it to the bridge and am giving you a long shot of the Patterson Bridge. See it in the distance (below the shadow on the hillside). Major renovations going on and as you can see, several spans of the bridge are missing.

This would probably be a good time to remind you to click on any photo to enlarge it and get a more detailed view of the scenery.

That was yesterday and the leaf pile is today. Corning City Public Works Department has been cleaning up their parks. The leaves are coming down fast!

Just past the Bridge Street bridge and you can see the Southside hill again. In the center of this picture and just a bit to the left is a huge (and still growing) pile of concrete debris from the bridge being renovated.

A bright sunny morning and a good time to walk on down the river to get a better view of the Patterson Bridge. This part of the dike has a sidewalk.

Riding the Northside-Southside Bus

The morning started off with a quick downpour and then settled in to “hot and humid”. I walked to Wegmans and boarded the bus when it came back round to start the Southside route.

I left the bus all the way across town so I could get a look at the new Park Avenue location for Corning’s Salvation Army Thrift Shop (aka Salvo). While waiting for the bus’ return, I also perused the goods in the Dollar General store, then sauntered over to the nearby Peaches’n’Cream for a child-sized dish of chocolate peanut butter ice cream. Mmmm, yum!

Walking in the heat didn’t appeal to me, especially when carrying an umbrella (just in case!), a small bag of purchases from Dollar General, my pocketbook and the dish of ice cream.

Oh no, the seats outside the ice cream store were soaked due to the rain. Across the street, however, bordering the cemetery, was a stone (concrete?) wall. I crossed and settled down on a shady portion of the wall.










At this point in time, I realized that my camera batteries had run down. So, I switched to the iPad and its built-in camera.







On the bus headed back to Corning’s Northside, I couldn’t resist taking more photos. Not through the dirty windows beside me, but through the fairly clean panes on the doors.

Corning's Chemung River Frozen Over

It’s Sunday. Clear blue skies. No wind, not even a breeze. That’s a good thing. And finally the temperature in Corning NY is back up over 20-degrees Fahrenheit. The high 20’s and for an hour or so, it was just over 30-degrees F.

It’s been so cold, I haven’t been walking. Just to the mailbox and to the apartment complex’s laundry room. I don’t think I’ve been anywhere on foot since Tuesday.

So, today I walked to Wegmans for some groceries and discovered that the river is covered with ice.

Tomorrow -- Monday -- more of the same. Temperatures in the low 30’s. But... all day long, there’s the distinct possibility of snow and ice accumulation.

We didn’t have much snow or cold weather last winter. This winter seems to be making up for the deficit.

A Walk On The Northside

If you’re from out of town and are doing the touristy thing -- that is, going to the Corning Museum of Glass (known to us locals as CMOG!) -- you’ll probably leave your vehicle in the CMOG parking lot behind Black’s Auto Service Center on Pulteney Street. Logical place, too, because that particular parking area is just off NY-17/I-86's Exit 46.

You’ve parked. Now walk south to the intersection of Pulteney and Centerway. Cross the street and that’s where you’ll find the sidewalk leading to the front entrance at CMOG.

Speaking of Black’s, yesterday’s (Thursday) price for Regular gas was $3.93. High compared to states further south. When I headed out on vacation to Maryland in early October, the price was $4.21. Maryland offered a bargain at $3.55-3.60.

See the hills in the background of the Sunoco photo. The leaves are falling fast. The red sign is for the CMOG parking lot and the truck in the center of the photo is coming from the direction of Exit 46.

Now that you know where you are, here’s a picture of a Corning Inc. parking garage on Pulteney Street. I took it for the colorful trees!

This sign sits in front of the Corporate Offices on Pulteney Street. Ahead is the intersection of Centerway. The long walkway (shown in the lead photo to this post) goes to the right.


Lots of construction -- I know not what! -- going on between the Corporate Offices and CMOG (CMOG is closest to you).

There’s a narrow driveway next to the long sidewalk. It goes the entire block and is used only by the CMOG bus. This bus runs every fifteen minutes, from the parking lot to CMOG to downtown Corning on Market Street.

That’s the red CMOG flag with the American flag next to it (and flying slightly higher, as it properly should). I love the ornamental grasses that front the entire CMOG complex. Not everyone does, but I do.

One last mention... the new transportation center has suddenly popped up. Last I knew, before going on vacation, the foundations were being poured. Then as I rode through town with my daughter, I spotted the new building and was able to pull out my camera for a quick drive-by shot.

Several friends on Facebook have posted that there is snow just west of us, especially up in the hills. I can’t wait! We got gypped last winter with too little snow. This snowy scene is from 2010.

Today’s prediction was for rain. There was little of that, too. The weekend weather is predicted to include snow. I can only hope.
