Corning's Northside Along The Dike And Back On W. William Street

I walked out back and up to the river, not intending to go anywhere. My walks often start that way.

In this set of photos, I'm on the northside and in the pic above, I'm looking over to the southside of Corning at a small set of houses. Most of Corning's southside housing is to the left and unseen in this pic.

Looking back along the dike where I see another view of the Hillview Drive playground.

I had to lean against the tower to keep my balance as I moved in as close as possible and looked up.

The Patterson Bridge is undergoing extensive repairs.

Still on the dike alongside the Chemung River, I looked to my right at William Street and noticed these two houses. One pristine and beautifully landscaped. Its neighbor a work in progress.

Now I've left the dike and am walking back parallel to the river, on West William Street. Look close and you'll see that the orange is rust.

I didn't recognize the tall bushes or the flowers, but they were certainly beautiful.

Corvettes, Slammin’ Jammin’, Night Shots And More On Corning’s Northside

Corning has experienced cooler temperatures this week. Nighttime lows in the 50s and 60s. Daytime temperatures in the 70s and low 80s. Absolutely refreshing to everyone I've spoken with. It seems that while I was out of town visiting my son in Maryland, the heat was unfriendly and humid.

I took my first lengthy walk in a month because my leg has been bothering me. Loved everything about my little journey, not just the weather.

Just down the street, at the Comfort Inn, a group of Corvette devotees were gathering round their highly buffed red, white and blue cars after a drive to Corning from PA (which isn’t really that far away--I think we’re only about 12 miles from the state line).

And they’re off...

Grace Methodist Episcopal Church at the end of the block. Take note, too, of the old brick sidewalks.

Each year I take photos of this deteriorating 3-car garage. Someone with a sense of humor saw fit to place a wreath in the front of the middle door.

I couldn’t decide which shot was my favorite, so here’s the second, presented to you in “sepia”.

These last four photos were taken three days ago about 7:15 P.M. I walked up and down the dike beside the Chemung River to get them. I didn’t stay out too long because it was cold... really... down in the 60s and I was wearing a short sleeve shirt. Brrr!

Riding the Northside-Southside Bus

The morning started off with a quick downpour and then settled in to “hot and humid”. I walked to Wegmans and boarded the bus when it came back round to start the Southside route.

I left the bus all the way across town so I could get a look at the new Park Avenue location for Corning’s Salvation Army Thrift Shop (aka Salvo). While waiting for the bus’ return, I also perused the goods in the Dollar General store, then sauntered over to the nearby Peaches’n’Cream for a child-sized dish of chocolate peanut butter ice cream. Mmmm, yum!

Walking in the heat didn’t appeal to me, especially when carrying an umbrella (just in case!), a small bag of purchases from Dollar General, my pocketbook and the dish of ice cream.

Oh no, the seats outside the ice cream store were soaked due to the rain. Across the street, however, bordering the cemetery, was a stone (concrete?) wall. I crossed and settled down on a shady portion of the wall.










At this point in time, I realized that my camera batteries had run down. So, I switched to the iPad and its built-in camera.







On the bus headed back to Corning’s Northside, I couldn’t resist taking more photos. Not through the dirty windows beside me, but through the fairly clean panes on the doors.

Cemetery on west side of Park Avenue ~ August 2011

I wonder if even the locals can figure out where this is. I just happened to glance up one day and noticed it. Amazing how a different approach can change a view. Is there a view you love? Try taking a few steps left or right and look again. Or step up on a rock. Or lay down on your back.



Newspaper boxes on the corner are becoming a thing of the past as the Internet becomes more popular.

Everything is greening up quickly.



This is how most tulips look in Corning today, including mine. They will be opening within a day or two. I counted 25 in my tiny garden. Can't wait to see them!



Can you believe that beautiful green grass?! Already needs cutting all over town.



West Market Street. On the left is Three Birds Restaurant. Years ago it used to be a car dealership and an elevator transported cars to the upper floors for display. In the middle is the old McClintock Hotel and bar. Gone now. On the right, the lower floor housed the Shoe Doctor for many years. Upstairs was an apartment. I lived there for several years. Too noisy with a bar next door and several across the street! Otherwise a great place to live.
