Corning Headquarters ~ Reflections

Welcome to the New Year...

It's only been a week or so since Christmas and receiving my new camera. Still loving the difference this Nikon makes in the quality and detail in the photos I take.

I took these pictures of the front of the Corning Inc. headquarters building from a distance, then did some cropping on the computer.

I'm often surprised and pleased by what I see and photograph on my walks, but because the screen on the camera is so small and my eyesight is not so good, it's the finished product that sometimes takes my breath away.

What actually IS and what each of us SEES are not necessarily the same. Reflections can be deceiving. For instance, look at yourself in a mirror, then the next time you're walking on a downtown city street, look at your reflection in a window. Well, before I get too reflective, I invite you to enlarge each photo and notice what's really there... or is it?

My Christmas Camera!

Merry Christmas to me! Yes, indeed, it’s a very Merry Christmas because my family gifted me with a brand new camera. This one allows me to take close-up shots from far away.

For instance, I stood on the Chemung River dike (northside) and took this photo of one of the out-buildings to the Benjamin Patterson Inn on Pulteney Street, two blocks away.

Then I turned around and took this shot of houses across the river on the southside hill...

From the same position, I panned right all the way past the residential areas and was able to finally see that what I thought was a lone house was really a houseboat...

My previous camera, a small, inexpensive Canon digital really did a good job, but never could get me close to the long shots.

Now I’m working with a Nikon Coolpix L105.

On the Bridge Street bridge, I looked up to the top and saw a pigeon. Look how close and clear I got with this new camera. Love it!

I looked down at J&T Auto Body Shop from the dike to see this one and zoomed in on the back of the bright red plow.

A SPECIAL REMINDER ~ Click just to the left of each photo to see an enlarged version, then back up to return to the blog. Or click directly on a photo and you’ll be able to see enlarged versions of all the photos in this entry. At least that’s how it works for me!

Just to give you an idea of what I can do with the new camera, I’m including a shot I took at three different settings. The first picture is the is what caught my eye, then I moved the lens in closer and took a closer one. I adjusted the lens a third time for the final photo.

(If anyone is looking for a good starter camera for themselves or a child, I’m going to sell my Canon at a low, low price.)

Season's Greetings

Almost Christmas again here in Corning, New York, and still no snow, at least not that I’ve seen. Hurry up snow, I want some. In fact, I may throw in some snow photos from last winter.

Also, if you want to get more in the mood for Christmas in Corning, take a look at the pictures I posted in December 2010.

Merry Christmas!!

Santa, Snowmen and Tis the season...

Sunshine and above 20-degree weather allows me to resume walking outdoors. It’s been a while. Too-o-o cold. Saturday, however, I walked down Market Street and back. Imagine my surprise when I saw a giant inflated Santa atop one of the buildings.

After that I paid close attention to how the Market Street merchants are picturing the holidays. And that’s when I decided to post another entry in this blog just two days after the last.

Which picture belongs with which store? Something in each photo is apt to give it away! For instance, the festive (and live) cat sitting below a bicycle--that shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out.

Better yet, if you’re in the area, take a walk on Market Street to see these holiday depictions and more.
