Corning NY ~ May 15 and 16, 2013

It’s always windy on the bridges crossing the Chemung River. On this particular day, May 15, I was crossing the bridge on my walk home following a hair cut. No, this is not the style my hair dresser gave me!

Elders exercising at the Corning Senior Center. The Chemung River is just the other side of the view out the windows.

The new transportation center is coming together nicely and should be open sometime this summer, I assume. Local busses and others that travel to nearby communities will now assemble here between Wall and Cedar Streets, along Dennison Parkway, to load and unload riders.

Photos for Corning NY Step by Step are taken with two cameras -- a Nikon and a Canon. Today I added a third camera to the set. The first three photos (hair, Senior Center, transportation center) were taken with the camera on my new iPad Mini, a Mother’s Day gift from my children.

I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see. (John Burroughs)

A tree’s offshoots have been cut back.

This bush’s attraction was in the late afternoon light shining on it.

(Each photo can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

Flowers carpet a garden in a front lawn on Pulteney Street.

The appeal in this shot was the lighting and the flowers losing their color as they make way for the formation of ornamental fruits.

In Wegmans’ parking lot, the driver of a tour bus from Vermont cleans off the windows. Look closely at the trees to see the effects of the gusting winds.

Spring flowers are all around us. Corning NY is greening up and we’ve been grateful to see the vibrant colors of late April and early May.

It's June ~ or is it?

We experiencing the strangest weather here in Corning, although it’s probably not any stranger than the weather in other parts of the U.S. or the world. The thing is, it’s June and you’d think it would warm and sunny, maybe a bit humid. That’s what you’d think.

Yet in the past week we’ve had really hot weather, we’ve had rain, hail, thunderstorms and windy days. Today hovered in the 60s (fahrenheit) with some rain. The rainy period started off with grey skies. I sat on the porch for a few minutes of it and while there, the sun came blazing out for just a short time and the rain kept on.

These are a few photos I’ve taken recently. No rhyme or reason to them. They just caught my eye.

The DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation has responsibility for mowing along the river. The budget must have been cut because they let the grass grow several feet high before sending out the mowers.

Not too far from home, at the corner of Hillvue Avenue, these roses charm me every year. Well, not these exact same ones; these are the descendants of last year’s roses.

Definitely windy enough and warm enough to hang out clothes to dry. Clothespins waiting.

Only four photos, you ask? All right, let’s see a few from the end of May...

Like, the log cabin at the Benjamin Patterson Inn with apple trees in front.

Look at the gorgeous bushes. Yes, that’s a house hiding behind them.

Corning Natural Gas at the end of West William Street.

Last but not least, vendors tents set up on Market Street for a recent (annual) GlassFest.

I didn't attend the 2012 Glass Fest. Looking back, I was surprised to see that I devoted three blog posts to the event in 2011...

Saturday and sunshine at the Corning NY Glass Fest

It's Saturday and I spent three hours downtown at the GlassFest--day two for me. Imagine That's Rody wanted to be in my blog and climbed onto my shoulder. We look good together! Ginny has a huge selection of glass marbles. Who of us who grew up in the 40s and 50s doesn't remember drawing a circle in the dirt?!

For a $1 donation in the fundraiser jar, I got to make my own piece of candy in front of Beyond Baskets. It was yummy, but I think Gary's homemade chocolates are to die for!

Beautiful, small, almost flat vases. The maker cut flowers from his own yard to show off his work. Beautiful...

Click on any picture to see an enlarged version.

I love, love, love these pieces. Wear on necklace chain and everyone will notice...

Look at the one with the paw prints. So cute...

Marilyn Puccio (of Dick and Marilyn) shows off her talent and the ukuleles they sell at Marich Music. Lessons anyone? Ask Marilyn for the details.

Next two photos ~ the front and back of what comes from an old organ. Take a look up close...

At the same antique store, end of East Market Street (Tom Mancuso's place), I was given a tour of old, old, old radios, put back in perfect working condition by the man who gave me the tour. Some floor models; some smaller. All priced under $300...

The oldest - on the right - dates back to 1937.

In front of the antique stores, table after table of older Corning/Revere dishes. No need to search out Ebay; just step up to these tables and you'll find a huge selection...

171 Cedar Arts Center: Red Hot & Raku. I took a video, just over a minute and it's too long to load here. I'll have to figure out how to shorten it. Any ideas?

Corning's Southside Neighborhood Association held a fundraiser at 171 Cedar Arts Center. Sno Cones and Monster Cookies. I asked the girls to hold out some of the monsters so I could get a better shot. Saw a fire truck passing down the street. I headed back towards Market Street and looking back, I saw 4-5 fire fighters walking off munching on cookies..

A street artist has spent several hours creating this buffalo - using pastels - modeled after Tom Gardner's buffalo bursting out of the building on Cedar Street...

I couldn't begin to get to everything today, so I'm going back tomorrow - Sunday. I'm really looking forward to hearing the Hep Cats again. Big Band music with a super songbird - Lou Anne Heth-Carson providing the vocals. 3 - 5 PM in Centerway Square.

See you there? I'm the one with the camera - Canon Power Shot A480.
