Corning has a new transportation center on Dennison Parkway, between Wall and Cedar Streets. Various local and area busses will be picking up and dropping off passengers here instead of in the several different locations on Tioga Avenue. Some air conditioning or heat while waiting, public restrooms, lots of comfortable seating, and possibly snack machines will be a welcome change for riders. I don’t know for sure, but am guessing that long distance busses such as Trailways and Greyhound will also use this facility.
At the west end of that same block, a parking lot. Seen here Aniello’s Pizzeria and Glaswerk Optical.

I have a feeling that Wineglass Marathon preparations start soon after the previous year's event.

Corning NY ~ May 15 and 16, 2013

It’s always windy on the bridges crossing the Chemung River. On this particular day, May 15, I was crossing the bridge on my walk home following a hair cut. No, this is not the style my hair dresser gave me!

Elders exercising at the Corning Senior Center. The Chemung River is just the other side of the view out the windows.
The new transportation center is coming together nicely and should be open sometime this summer, I assume. Local busses and others that travel to nearby communities will now assemble here between Wall and Cedar Streets, along Dennison Parkway, to load and unload riders.

Photos for Corning NY Step by Step are taken with two cameras -- a Nikon and a Canon. Today I added a third camera to the set. The first three photos (hair, Senior Center, transportation center) were taken with the camera on my new iPad Mini, a Mother’s Day gift from my children.
I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see. (John Burroughs)

A tree’s offshoots have been cut back.
This bush’s attraction was in the late afternoon light shining on it.
(Each photo can be enlarged by clicking on it.)
Flowers carpet a garden in a front lawn on Pulteney Street.
The appeal in this shot was the lighting and the flowers losing their color as they make way for the formation of ornamental fruits.
In Wegmans’ parking lot, the driver of a tour bus from Vermont cleans off the windows. Look closely at the trees to see the effects of the gusting winds.

Darlene, Ernie, Larry, Wendy and Barbara
I spotted this gorgeous, textured jacket and just had to ask for permission to photograph it. The lady was flattered and glad to pose. We walked on down the street chatting. As I was about to ask who she was (I knew I’d seen her someplace before), she stopped to enter Home Again. A-ha, it was Darlene, owner of a great little consignment store in Corning.

In the background: The Rockwell Museum. Foreground: parking lot of the new transportation center. Corner of Denison Parkway and Cedar Street.
Looking at the transportation center block from the opposite end. The frame of the building itself is complete and covered with plastic to protect it and the workers from the weather.
Stars shine in the windows of the Rockwell Museum.
Ernie creates beautiful scenes in Market Street shop windows.
Larry, semi-retired Star-Gazette writer, continues to comment on Corning Inc. His latest piece is Corning Watch: Gorilla Glass awaits King Kong demand.
I stood back from a street corner so these guys could continue on their way. Made for a good picture. Obviously the driver thought so, too. He stayed right there at the stop sign and smiled brightly until I took more photos.
Last minute touches the day before Exhibit A’s opening at their new spot on Market Street. Stop by and prepared to be bugged!
Centerway Square is being prepped for the holidays. A few lights are up and Santa’s shop has been erected. More to come...
Among the newest shops on Market Street is Crystal City Olive Oil. I totally missed this one as it was being readied. Fascinating place to go for olive oil tastings.
Wendy, owner of Crystal City Olive Oil...
Barbara is bottling my choice, a mushroom and sage infused olive oil. You can read about my first use of it at my food blog Step by Step in the Kitchen where I made Acorn Squash Stuffed with Brown Rice Pilaf.

History, Renovation and Beauty
Historical buildings in Corning NY, even those that have seen better days, have their own kind of beauty. Shown above is the Steuben County Courthouse, known to most locals now as the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) where you register vehicles and get drivers' licenses.
This cropped version of the same photo shows ornate pillars and windows. I don't know much about architecture, but wonder if those pieces above the two windows on the right are what is called keyholes. Notice, too, that the steps leading to the front entrance are in dire need of repair.
The World War Memorial Library on the corner of First and Pine Streets is no longer used but has a rich history.
From the corner of Denison Parkway and Cedar Street, you can see two of the stately old churches on Corning's First Street.
All the buildings have been torn down to make way for the new Transportation Center. In the background is the Rockwell Museum of Western Art and on the right is the alley, lined with construction equipment, and buildings that front on Market Street.
Framing the footers for the new Transportation Center between Market Street and Denison Parkway.
Work is underway on the Centerway Walking Bridge.
Riverfront Centennial Park from Brisco Bridge...
Parking lot improvements at the YMCA on Corning's northside...
Standing on the northside of the Chemung River, looking east to the Bridge Street bridge...
A memorial, resting garden near the corner of Pulteney and Bridge Streets, Corning's northside...
This little guy (or gal!) sat still for the longest time while I took photo after photo...

On August 8, 2012, I included some photos in the alley between Denison Parkway and Market Street that showed murals drawn by local students. Here is a long shot featuring some of the murals.
